Devona Slater is a strong ally to both physicians and their patients. For more than a decade, she has been committed to helping physicians manage their practices so they can devote more time to doing what they were trained to do – Practice Medicine.
Currently and for the past ten years, Devona serves as a compliance auditor specializing in anesthesia and pain management issues. She has traveled to 49 different states and helped numerous anesthesia professionals with billing, coding and compliance issues. She co-authored the book, Prescription for Pain Billing and also authored the business chapter in Winer’s Pain Management, A Practical Guide for Clinicians, Sixth Edition. She currently offers a web based educational tools for pain management billing and coding.
Prior to working with ACE, she was the Business Manager of ALM, Inc., a subsidiary of Physician Support Systems. She was responsible for billing and practice management for over 40 physician group practices specializing in reimbursement for hospital-based physicians. Slater operates on the foundations of teamwork and trust. Dedicated to assisting physicians manage the business end of their practices, Slater educates physicians and their patients about their rights and responsibilities in the process of procuring reimbursement for medical treatment. She readily admits that her first love is anesthesia and enjoys challenging third-party payors on appeal and assisting in contract negotiations. One of her major accomplishments was directing the team to write Medisyn, a software package that ALM used daily to do physician billing. The program was specific to anesthesia and other medical specialties, which retained information in a complete database for analytical purposes.
A respected member of numerous professional healthcare associations, including the Medical Group Management Association, Anesthesia Administrators Assembly, Ambulatory Health Care Administration, Healthcare Compliance Association, and Association of Certified Fraud Examiners, Slater has a solid background in tax accounting and business administration. She has spoken at several national meetings including the Diamond Headache Foundation, Society for Pain Practice Management, Anesthesia Answer Book, American Society of Anesthesiologist and Anesthesia Administration Assembly. Her talks have included educating physicians and practice managers on coding, office billing audits, compliance, managed care issues regarding preparing for managed care, contracts, tracking multiple fee schedules, and capitation.
Slater is a graduate of Central Missouri State University with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and Juvenile Corrections. In July 1996, Devona received her designation as a Certified Manage Care Professional from the Healthcare Financial Management Association. In June of 2001 she received her certification in fraud and abuse auditing for health care organizations.
